Obeah Spell Meanings
By now you may be familiar with the term High Science to refer to Obeah. Other more common terms such as Black Magic and Witchcraft may frequently be used to refer to Obeah as well. These terms are more often used when referencing the destructive, rather than the healing, powers contained within Obeah spells. One etymology for the term “Obeah” is from the Ashanti language, meaning “Sorcery.” This also indicates how the hexes and curses of Obeah have shaped the terminology used when referring to it.
Similarly, another possible etymology of the word Obi is that it means “Source.” This is an important etymology if it is true – Obi Science does indeed view the energy that it uses, as well as the spiritual world it interacts with, as the “source” of life. It is this very life source, this force, which makes Obeah possible. The adept Obi man or woman is able to manipulate the source of life and energy itself, to enact powerful Obeah spells that can even change matter itself. |

Obeah as Spirit Mastery
Yet another potential beginning for the word Obeah is the African “Obeye,” or Spirit. This Spirit is not of the disembodied type, but is analogous with the term “soul.” The Obeye, however, was a spirit or soul said to be possessed only by the Obi-man. Conversely, the Obeye has also been described as a spirit that rides the Obi practitioner similar to the way a spirit rides the Voodoo Oungun.

Obeah - Rootwork and Healing
A final origin for the term Obeah might be a Caribbean derivation of a word for “poison.” Although this does refer to poison in a traditional sense, it can also refer to the use of herbs and spells to heal. This points back to the Obi man or woman as both a wielder of powerful curses and healing spells. |
